The Young Shakespeareans NPG
The Young Shakespeareans consists of a 12-week program wherein Teaching Artists lead 4th and 5th grade students (many of whom speak only Spanish at home) in a carefully developed and challenging curriculum of academic and theatrical activities, culminating in performances of a high-quality, full-scale production of the original but abridged Elizabethan text of a Shakespearean play.
Voices Neighborhood Council awarded $4,964 to The Young Shakespeareans of Normandie Avenue Elementary School for multiple performances of Romeo and Juliet in period costumes and sets, to a soundtrack of classical music with contemporary hip-hop backbeat. This level of production quality truly honored the discipline and spirit of excellence that the students had developed by the end of the program, and celebrated their devotion to each other and their mutual achievement.
Two performances took place during regular school hours to welcome students, teachers, and community leaders. The third production was performed in the late afternoon to accommodate working parents, extended families and friends, and attendees from outside the immediate community.
